Running in the Snow

We haven't had a storm here in about a month and, honestly, I can't say I've missed the snow. But, we just got a storm two days ago. The problem isn't really the day of the snowfall. That doesn't bother me much. It's peaceful and pretty and it seems like the cloud cover insulates everything a little bit, so it isn't too cold. I actually love running in the storm. Not in a blizzard, but when the snow is falling softly and you're really the only one out there.

What I hate is running a couple of days after the storm. By then the cars have made everything a giant mess. The cloud cover is gone so it is bitter cold and absolutely MISERABLE! Plus, after the repeated melting and freezing it seems like every couple of steps I might fall right on my face. (And yes, this has actually happened to me. I'll even admit that it's happened more than once.)

My favorite trick on a really cold running day is to put my clothes in the dryer on low heat for about 10 minutes. I get dressed really fast and head directly outside. Between the dryer heat and the layers of clothing, I feel blissfully warm when I leave. And it makes me feel a little bit better about the miserable weather. (Though my favorite running day of the year is always the first day I can wear my summertime running clothes!) By the time my clothes aren't warm anymore, I'm sweating enough that I don't even notice.

Here's to making winter running a little bit easier!

First day of my new blog. This blog is going to be about random things that pertain to running. Today being that it is the first day and this post will be short I am just going to leave you with a quote from Steve Prefontaine "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."
